Artwork Reproduction...Sell many copies of your artwork
An artist can sell an original artwork once. Prior to selling your original piece, Jason Sullivan Photography can photograph your image-based artwork with a high-resolution digital camera and prepare the resulting image files ready for artwork reproduction printing. Sell many copies of your artwork online on-demand, or have lab print runs printed ready for art shows and markets.
About Artwork Reproduction
Key features of our artwork reproduction service:
- Artworks are photographed with a 45-megapixel camera that can handle 14-bit colour. This allows for up to 16,384 shades of colour per red, green and blue colour channel, therefore providing the ability to capture up to 4 trillion colours in a single colour drawing or painting. Colour match is also excellent and true to the original artwork.
- Pixel Shift technology can be used when photographing the artwork to obtain an image file 4 times the camera resolution and with greater colour accuracy. This creates an image file native print size 2 times the print size of a single photo from the same camera used to photograph the artwork.
- Artworks are evenly lit when being photographed. This is important to produce a digital image of the artwork that is flat and without introduced shadows.
- Artworks will be photographed at low ISO (64-200 ISO) so the resulting digital image file has no image noise or pixilation.
- The texture in the artwork is captured in great detail. The texture (brush strokes, canvas fabric texture, pencil marks, etc.) will be visible in the resulting reproduction print.
- For black & white (greyscale) and colour drawn images such as pencil and ink, the paper background (the original page texture) can be removed to produce a plain white backround behind the drawn subject. This means the new paper medium page texture will be visible as part of the reproduction print giving a completely natural look to the finished prints.
- Artwork reproduction image files can be contrast, texture, colour and/or detail enhanced if the artist chooses.
- Imperfections can be removed from the artwork image - dust specks, scratches, dirty marks, moisture rings, etc.
- If you've forgotten to sign an artwork we can sign it for you. Some artists complete an artwork and forget to sign the completed work, we can transfer your signature from one artwork to another if needed.
- The captured artwork image can be scaled up or down in size to then be printed at different standard print sizes. An artwork can be effectively scaled by 50%-100% plus of its original size without losing detail.
Reproduction Preparation Notes and Limitations
A few things to note:
- Ideally your original artwork should be unframed and not under glass. Glass with cause bad reflection and the artwork will not photograph well.
- If the artwork is framed with no glass, we can 'overshoot' the artwork and capture the edges of the framing, we then crop to just inside the frame edges to produce an image file that only shows the artwork.
- Make sure the surface of the artwork is clean and as dust and hair free as possible. Use a soft cloth or air blower to remove dust and hair.
- The original artwork size limitation is around 2 meters on the longest dimension. Much bigger than this and it gets very difficult to maneuver the artwork ready for image capture.
Artwork Reproduction Pricing
The artist will receive a high-resolution image file (TIFF image file at 300 dpi and 16-bit colour) ready for reproduction printing and several common JPEG image file sizes to use in websites and social media. Image files are fully colour balanced and corrected ready for photo lab printing. Each image file will contain all the appropriate metadata ready for image file cataloging and indexing by search engines.
1-3 original artworks. $120 per artwork. (3 for $360)
5-10 original artworks. $100 per artwork. (10 for $1,000)
11 plus original artworks. $85 per artwork. (15 for $1,275)

What is Pixel Shift Image Capture?
Pixel shift allows multiple photos to be taken while shifting the camera's image sensor by 0.5 pixel to 1 pixel per shot. The resulting photos are merged to generate a higher-resolution image than the camera can capture via normal single-frame shooting.
Our Pixel Shift process captures 32 photos of your artwork that are each shifted by 0.5 to 1 pixel per shot in all directions across the camera's image capture sensor. Combining the 32 photos where the same camera sensor pixels have been sampled and captured multiple times during shooting provides a number of artwork reproduction benefits:
- more detailed information can be captured, resulting in higher-resolution and higher-definition images.
- image capture noise is noticeably reduced.
- reduces moiré and color fringing across colour transitions, detailed patterns and edges.
- colour reproduction of details is improved compared to a single photo of the artwork - smoother transition between colour changes across pixels in the image.
- a greater depth of field (more in sharper focus) across the surface of the artwork.
Single Photo Capture Versus Pixel Shift Capture
A single photo from our 45-megapixel camera:
8256 x 5504 at 300 dpi = a native file print size of 69.90 x 46.6 cm (27.52 x 18.35 inches). 16-bit TIFF uncompressed file size = 91Mb
32 photos at 45-megapixel using pixel shift, processed in to one image file:
16512 x 11008 at 300 dpi (now 181-megapixel image) = a native file print size of 139.80 x 93.2 cm (55.04 x 36.69 inches). 16-bit TIFF uncompressed file size = 364Mb
Two times the print size (resolution) of a single photo.
The resulting image file will have better colour reproduction accuracy and less noise than a single photograph.
Pixel Shift technology is very beneficial for artists that are planning to print artwork reproductions at larger print sizes.
